WAR WITH WASTES
Enormous quantity of wastes are emanating from every household / apartment in the form of plastics, glass containers, cartons, newspapers, foodies and many more.
How to dispose of these items?
A big question bothering the local administrations of every country.
Meeting after meeting, ends up in heated discussions without a workable solution!
Private agencies are prepared to procure these wastes and try to recycle them and make money.
In order to do this job, they have to get permission from local administration like Panchayats, Municipalities or Corporations.
They find it difficult to get through this ocean filled with corrupt crocodiles.
The end result is that no one comes forward to enter the war against waste.
The enemy is building up its strength day be day making a hell for all those who live in a house â “ big or small.
Somehow the waste management in India is not well organized.
Only in certain cities proper control is taken to dispose the waste.
â ˜Clean environment for healthy livingâ ™ is the slogan we talk about.
In practice, no one is following the principles of keeping the surroundings free from waste materials.
It is a common sight in cities even in villages plastic carry bags flying in the air.
At every corner of the road, we find the wastes are dumped and the street dogs and sometimes human beings use it as a treasure hunting place and spread all over the place.
No one bother about it.
Once in a week a truck of the local administration cleans them up so shabbily.
Again the same story continues and life goes on.
Thus the war with waste continues.
Can we try to reduce the waste production itself?
A question to be thought of by every individual.
If we do, a certain percentage of waste will be reduced.
Likewise we need to think of recycling the waste locally and use them again.
Someone said: â ˜waste is wealth.â ™
Then why we are not doing it?
Proper training for people is needed on Sundays in this important issue.
Undertaking such useful activities can be entrusted to NGOs with Government aid.
In developed countries many measures are implemented for waste disposal.
They work very efficiently, of course with strict Government rule.
People abide by the rules and their towns and cities are free from waste materials.
Interestingly people pay for their waste disposal.
Similar rules are also coming in India to meet the expenditure incurred in waste removal.
But unfortunately, the opposition parties are not allowing it without suggesting a better method of waste disposal.
How sad it is!
We live in a democratic country with great aspirations to become a developed nation by 2020.
As affluence has grown in many countries and certain parts of India, the wastes have increased beyond imagination.
The recycling of these wastes has reduced considerably the heaps in advance countries in Europe and the US.
The recycling of 72 per cent in rural areas and 60 per cent in urban areas are happening in Belgium.
It is considered to be the highest in the world.
Recycling and reuse centres have come up in large numbers all over the world and they make good amount of money.
Household in Belgium are paying for disposing their wastes if they do not recycle.
Incineration of wastes and production of energy is one of recycling in some countries.
But there are problems according to environmental groups.
Incineration costs less than 7 euros per ton of wastes.
Such payment measures brought down the wastes by 30 per cent.
â ˜Everything can be reusedâ ™ but people are attracted towards new materials, by throwing away the old ones.
One of the important activities the social groups have to do is to create an awareness program among the public about the seriousness of mounting wastes and their management in and around towns and cities.
Constant convincing coaching of people at every colony has to be undertaken by appropriate agencies.
The responsibility of local administration in this aspect is very important.
Let us hope for a waste-free world.
